Suggestions for reinstating a suspended driver's license

Because Georgia roads are filled with so many motorists on any given day, it can be easy for some to forget that driving is a privilege that is only granted to those who have completed required courses and demonstrate safe driving practices. In some cases, people make irresponsible decisions that could result in the suspension of their license. This punishment, while inconvenient, is designed to encourage offenders to revisit safe driving practices and recommit to follow the rules that have been put into place to protect them, their passengers and other motorists on the road.

According to the Georgia Department of Driver Services, license suspension can be the result of several things including the following:

  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Excessive and repetitive speeding.
  • Failure to perform required child support obligations.
  • Failure to appear for a required court date.
  • Points violations.
  • Driving without proper proof of insurance.

When drivers who have received a suspension of their license wish to have their driving privileges reinstated, they must carefully adhere to required legal protocols to get their license back. The Balance suggests some helpful tips for people to consider including the following:

  • They should complete a defensive driving course.
  • They should promptly pay any required fees or fines.
  • They should read the suspension notice in its entirety and follow all required rules.
  • They should file an SR 22 on their car insurance policy.

Drivers seeking to have their license reinstated should keep in mind that processing times can take up to two weeks in some states.
