Is drunk driving still a problem in Georgia?

For so many decades now Georgia residents have been presented with public awareness campaigns, statistics and education warning them about the dangers of drinking and driving. Whether in driver's education classes or on roadside billboards, this message has been delivered time and time again. It would be understandable that you might feel that others have appropriately heard this message and are today making better choices. Sadly, statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration suggest otherwise.

In Fulton County alone, 127 people were killed in drunk driving accidents between 2012 and 2016, more than in any of Fulton County's neigboring counties. To make matters worse, the number of alcohol-related road fatalities rose noticeably in 2015 and 2016 over the prior three years. There were 21 such deaths in both 2012 and 2013 and 19 the following year. Then in 2015 a total of 34 people died in these crashes and another 32 were lost in 2016.

Statewide this trend is also seen. In 2012 and 2013, 295 and 296 people died in drunk driving wrecks, respectively. Another 279 lives were lost in 214 but as with Fulton County, the state saw a big jump in 2015 when 358 people died at the hands of drunk drivers. Last year, there were 368 vehicular fatalities in which alcohol was a noted factor. As the holiday season is now here, people should be aware of these realities when taking to the road to enjoy their celebrations.

This information is not intended to provide legal advice but is instead meant to help Georgia residents see and understand the ongoing risk that drunk drivers pose to them and their loved ones so they know how important taking action may be after a drunk driving accident happens.
