Do I have to wear a helmet to ride in Georgia?

Motorcycles are very vulnerable on Georgia roadways. Being much smaller than other vehicles on the road, they can be easily overlooked. When accidents happen, motorcyclists are at a high risk for serious injuries. That is why the state has enacted helmet laws. If you ride a motorcycle in the state of Georgia, you must wear a helmet, according to Consumer Reports. Unlike many other states, there is not an age limit on the helmet requirements. Regardless of how old you are or how long you have had your motorcycle license, you must wear a helmet to legally ride your bike on public roads.

If you do not wear a helmet, you may be ticketed by law enforcement. Even worse, not wearing a helmet exposes you to an extreme risk of a serious head injury or even death if you are involved in an accident. It has been shown that states with mandatory helmet laws have lower rates of injuries and deaths due to motorcycle accidents.  Furthermore, a helmet is around 67 percent effective at preventing a brain injury in the event of a crash.

When you choose a helmet to wear, you should always choose one approved by the Department of Transportation. The recommendation is to avoid novelty helmets and choose a traditional style with full coverage. If you are involved in an accident, even if your helmet is not damaged, it shoudl be replaced. Additionally, you should always follow the manufacturer's recommendations for how to wear the helmet and when to replace it.
