Slip-and-fall accidents at school

Now that autumn is almost here in Atlanta, one issue that parents should take some time to think about is slip-and-fall accidents that happen in school. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year, hospitals treat almost 2.8 million children for nonfatal fall injuries. Not all children are fortunate enough to survive their accidents. Some slip-and-fall incidents that happen in school zones result in brain trauma and death.

No one sends their children off to school with the expectation of them getting hurt. Many parents carefully screen educational facilities before they enroll their kids. The staff take measures to ensure the safety of their students and prevent accidents. However, not all fall accidents are avoidable. Parents should take some time to learn about common issues that can occur and put their children at risk of being hurt in slip-and-fall incidents.

Common causes of school fall accidents

Not all school-aged kids can identify fall hazards. Even the safest school environments may have risk factors that increase the likelihood of kids slipping, tripping and falling. Common issues that can lead to slip-and-fall injuries in school-aged children include missing handrails, walkway obstructions, slippery floors and materials, uneven floor surfaces and carpets and playgrounds. Between 2001 to 2008, 36 percent of kids suffered fractures in playground accidents, states the Children’s Safety Network.

Sometimes kids cause other children to fall. They may trip over their own shoestrings and from being shoved. Administrators, staff and teachers have a responsibility to prevent accidents by keeping the premises maintained, resolving hazardous conditions in a timely manner, providing proper notice of building problems and other conditions that could cause harm and to adequately supervise the students to keep them from becoming a threat to themselves and others.

It is important for parents to understand that not all school accidents are the result of negligence. Many parents find it beneficial to seek out an attorney for assistance with their situations.
