Ignition interlocks save lives

Drunk driving is an issue in Georgia as it is in every state. Officials have tried for years to find a method of deterrence that would reduce the number of drunk drivers on the roads. After some time and observation, it seems there may finally be an effective way to drastically cut drunk driving numbers and save lives. This is the use of ignition interlocks.

According to CNN, these devices are put on a convicted drunk driver's vehicle. The driver must activate the device before the vehicle will start by testing his or her blood alcohol level. If the level is over the state limit, the vehicle will not start. When they first began being used, many officials did not know if they were effective. However, a study released has shown they are effective and at high rates.

Implementation of them can be partial or full. Partial means they are only used for repeat offenders or offenders meeting certain criteria. Full implementation is when a state requires anyone convicted of a DUI to have and use them.

In Georgia, according to WXIA TV, a new law will allow drivers convicted of drunk driving to choose between a license suspension or an ignition interlock device. The device will cost around $100 to install and include a daily maintenance fee. The obvious benefit is a person will avoid losing his or her license and not have to worry about not being able to drive to work or handle other obligations that require the ability to drive. However, the downside is the cost, which is estimated to be around an average of $100 a month.
