Georgia motor vehicle deaths on the rise

One motor vehicle death is entirely too many. Unfortunately in the state of Georgia, this is becoming a bigger and bigger problem with each passing year.

The number of motor vehicle deaths in the state have increased by a third from 2014 to 2016. Not only is this the fifth highest increase in the United States, but it's more than two times the current national average.

In 2016 alone, more than 1,500 individuals were killed in motor vehicle accidents. The National Safety Council (NSC) president added the following:

"The top three killers are speed, alcohol and distraction. The same things that have killed us for decades are still killing us."

Despite the fact that drivers are aware of what's causing these deaths, the top causes remain a major problem throughout the country.

Adding to an increase in motor vehicle accident fatalities, the Peach State is also dealing with an increase in motorcycle, bicycle and pedestrian deaths.

Distracted driving, for example, remains an issue. Every year, 3,000 people are killed in accidents that are tied to distracted driving, such as texting or talking on a cellphone.

With gas prices low and the economy improving, it's only natural that more people are spending time on the road. When this happens, it can lead to overcrowding, which can contribute to accidents and subsequent deaths.

If you or a loved one is involved in a motor vehicle accident, your health always comes first. Only then can you turn your attention to the cause of the crash and the steps you can take to protect your legal rights.
