4 summer driving hazards that might surprise you

Every driver knows that there are dangers associated with driving. We know that disobeying traffic laws can be dangerous, as is driving while distracted or drunk.

However, there are some driving hazards of which you might not be as aware. These potentially surprising threats to your safety can be more common during the summer months, so it is a good idea to be aware of them in order to avoid them.

  1. Rural roads: As noted in this Scientific American article, there are more accidents on rural roads during July and August than any other time of the year. And more than half of all the fatal accidents that occurred in 2008 were on rural roads. Researchers believe that speeding, drowsiness and a higher engagement in behaviors like using a cellphone or eating on rural roads are to blame.
  2. Teen drivers: Young people are out of school and they have places to go during the summer. With more of these novice drivers on the road, there is a higher risk of accidents involving teen motorists.
  3. Road trippers: Summertime and road trips go hand-in-hand. With more road trips comes more people driving, and they drive for longer periods of time and in areas with which they are unfamiliar putting them at risk for drowsiness and confusion.
  4. Road construction: Last year, there were hundreds of road construction projects underway in Georgia, and this year is likely going to be the same. Be aware of delays, detours and drivers who are frustrated or upset.

These are just some of the summer-related hazards that pose a threat to Atlanta drivers. You can also expect more predictable hazards like drunk, distracted, drowsy drivers, and severe weather to be threats as well.

We hope that you and your loved ones make it through the summer without getting into an accident. However, the fact is that accidents can and do happen, despite your best efforts. In the event of a serious crash, it can be a wise decision to consult an attorney to assess your legal options.
