AAA study confirms increase of road rage in recent years

According to a recent study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, almost 80 percent of American drivers have engaged in some form of road rage on at least one occasion in the last year. Road rage, of course, comes in various expressions, including obscene gestures and yelling, as well as vehicle maneuvers. The latter can be particularly dangerous.

The survey showed that three percent of the 5.7 million drivers who participated in the survey acknowledged intentionally hitting another vehicle. Around the same amount admitted to stepping outside the vehicle in order to confront another driver. In some cases, such behavior can lead to fisticuffs or even murder.

While most drivers who engage in road rage do not intentionally slam into another vehicle, other less aggressive expressions of road rage can still lead to serious accidents. Such behavior includes purposefully trailing, cutting off another driver, and speeding.

Interestingly, the AAA study confirms the findings of other studies that road rage has increased in recent years. It may be that there are more vehicles on the road and greater congestion as a result. Whatever the reason for the increase, it is a concerning trend, especially for those who routinely drive in metro areas where rush hour inevitably leads to frustrations.

Those who engage in road rage can, of course, face criminal charges. Road rage can also result in personal injury litigation. Those who have been harmed in a road rage incident should contact an experienced personal injury attorney to have their case evaluated and to determine their options in terms of seeking recovery.
