Motorcycle accidents often deadly for riders

Motorcyclists are at a distinct disadvantage on Georgia roads. Even when motorcycle drivers are wearing proper safety equipment and taking all necessary precautions, negligent drivers can cause devastating motorcycle accidents. A recent accident between a motor vehicle and a motorcycle left one person dead.

Police believe that the 26-year-old driver of a large SUV to be at fault for the deadly accident. The SUV driver attempted to make a left hand turn for which she did not have the right of way and drove directly into the path of an oncoming motorcycle. Unable to stop in time to avoid a collision, the 54-year-old motorcyclist collided with the passenger side of the SUV.

Neither of the two SUV occupants suffered any injuries in the wreck. The motorcyclist, however, suffered serious injuries and had to be taken to an area hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. During that time, police shut down the scene of the accident in order to continue the investigation. Although no charges have been filed yet, the pending results of a toxicology test are expected to yield criminal allegations for the SUV driver. Police suspect that the SUV driver was under the influence of drugs at the time of the accident.

The victim was wearing a safety helmet that had been approved by the Georgia Department of Transportation and was apparently following other rules of the road at the time of the wreck. Unfortunately, even when motorcyclists take every possible precaution, motorcycle accidents tend to have especially devastating outcomes. While nothing could ever hope to replace a lost loved one's life, many surviving families choose to seek justice through wrongful death suits. If successfully followed through to completion, families can achieve legal recourse on behalf of their loved one's estate that can address funeral expenses and any medical bills incurred during attempted life-saving care, as well as other financial relief recognized by applicable laws.
