Family seeks compensation for loved one shot by police officer

Police officers are an invaluable aspect of the Georgia community. They help ensure the safety of all citizens across the state. However, like any other career, some individuals within the police community are not necessarily well-suited to the job. After an officer shot and killed a man who turned out to be unarmed, the victim's family filed a wrongful death suit in order to seek compensation for his death.

The incident occurred in March 2015, although the officer involved in the shooting was only recently indicted for the man's murder. Prior to the shooting, police received complaints that the man was wondering around his apartment complex while not wearing any clothes. Some of the callers mentioned that they were concerned by his behavior, which they described as erratic. Upon arrival at the scene, the officer shot the naked man not once but twice, killing him. He later claimed that he was in fear for his safety.

The victim was a veteran of the United States military who had served at least once tour in Afghanistan. In the wrongful death suit filed by the family, they pointed out that he suffered severe psychological trauma from his time spent in the Middle East. That trauma, they say, led to his mental episode that caused him to act so strangely. However, he was not violent at the time and did not pose any danger or harm to his neighbors or to the Georgia state officer. They also noted that he had no criminal history whatsoever.

Surviving family members of loved ones who have suffered wrongful deaths might be pleased to see criminal charges filed against a negligent or liable party, but this reaction is often not sufficient. Of course, no amount of financial compensation could ever begin to replace a person's life, but successfully navigated civil claims can provide more than just money to grieving members of a family. When able to cover unexpected funeral costs and other damages related to a person's death, families are often able to mourn and grieve without the worry of overwhelming financial burdens.
