Marine succumbs to extensive injury suffered in motorcycle wreck

A devastating accident cost the life of a Georgia-native Marine while he was home on leave to care for his mother. After suffering an extensive injury in a motorcycle accident, the young serviceman lost his life. Shortly after his death, a memorial ceremony was held at the naval air station where he was stationed.

Reports indicate that the young Marine's mother had just undergone surgery, prompting his return to Georgia. Apparently taking the opportunity to reunite with some of his hometown friends, he rode his motorcycle to meet a friend one Friday night. He never returned. Before he could actually meet his friend, a teenage driver cut him off, sparking a deadly chain of events.

When the driver -- who was only 16 years old -- pulled his vehicle in front of the Marine, there was not enough time to stop. The man apparently attempted to lay down the motorcycle in order to avoid a collision. He was unsuccessful; instead, he struck the back of the vehicle and lost consciousness. It is not clear if he was killed at the scene of the accident or if he survived long enough to be transported to a hospital for possible life-saving intervention.

The local community is understandably shaken by the death of an apparently well-known and loved Marine, and the military community has likely also suffered a significant loss. While no person's life could ever truly be replaced by any amount of legal recourse or compensation, his surviving family members would be well within their rights to pursue civil action against the apparently negligent driver whose actions caused the extensive injury that led to the Marine's death. Lawsuits are usually the last thing on the minds of grieving families in Georgia, but any compensation achieved through the successful navigation of a wrongful death claim can play an important role in addressing the financial and emotional damages caused by an accident.
