DUI charges filed against truck driver involved in fatal wreck

Despite how heavily America's consumer-based economy relies on big rigs to transport goods across state lines, truck drivers are still often given a bad rap by the general public. The driver of a tractor trailer was recently involved in a car wreck on a Georgia highway that left one person dead and several others injured. Although he was not actually in the cab of the truck at the time, police arrested the driver on DUI charges.

Just before the wreck, the truck driver was in the process of completing an inspection of his vehicle before hitting the road for what was presumably intended to be a long-haul trip. However, the driver allegedly failed to engage the parking brakes before beginning the inspection. The truck began to roll away, quickly gaining speed on an exceptionally steep hill until it entered the highway and collided with a passing vehicle.

Both the tractor trailer and the smaller passenger vehicle were pushed into the guardrail, and authorities say that the other vehicle was stuck underneath the larger truck. The adult female passenger of the vehicle is believed to have been killed upon impact, while her husband and two children survived. All three survivors were transported to the hospital for treatment.

After arriving on the scene, Georgia police requested that the truck driver submit to field sobriety testing, with which he complied. The results of those tests were apparently used to determine that he was possibly intoxicated. He was subsequently charged with DUI, involuntary manslaughter and several other charges related to the accident. Though severe in nature, these charges are not a finding of guilt. Like anyone else accused of a crime, the driver retains the presumption of innocence throughout the entirety of the criminal court process.
