Wrong-way drivers put other motorists on the road in serious danger, and a recent wreck on a Georgia highway was no exception. A man suffered an extensive injury after he was struck by a suspected drunk driver; unfortunately, he did not survive the wreck. The driver who caused the accident was arrested and charged with the victim's death.
The victim was riding his motorcycle in the eastbound lanes of the highway when another vehicle entered the highway traveling in the wrong direction. The westbound car then struck the motorcycle head-on. The motorcyclist died at the scene of the accident before he could be transported to a medical center for treatment.
Responding officers suspected that the wrong-way driver might have been intoxicated at the time of the time of the wreck. They arrested him on DUI and vehicular homicide charges in addition to charges of driving on the wrong side of the road. He is currently behind bars and has not been given the option to post bond.
Losing a loved one is never easy, but it can be even more difficult to accept when the death was caused by a preventable accident. The surviving relatives of those who have been killed from an extensive injury have legal options. Although evidence used by Georgia police to criminally charge a negligent driver can be useful when pursuing a wrongful death suit, it is not a necessary precursor for civil action. Successfully settled claims are often more than a route to valuable legal recourse; they can also provide a sense of justice for a family still grieving the loss of a life taken far before its time.
