Preventing injuries this Spring Break

How are you and your children going to spend spring vacation? If you cannot take time off of work, you may opt to do something fun on one of the vacation weekends or during the evenings. If you can get away, you may be opting to travel or visit loved ones. No matter how you choose to spend your spring vacation, please be advised that unique hazards may cause your children and teens harm during this time if you are not proactive in your approach to their surroundings.

If you are visiting loved ones or you are traveling and staying in a hotel, take stock of your surroundings as soon as you arrive. If you have infants, toddlers or young children, you may need to ensure that your surroundings are sufficiently baby-proofed or child-proofed. If you have older kids or teens, you may need to assess broader dangers like open water near your residence. Setting limits in regards to these hazards and enforcing those limits may be key to keeping your older children and teens safe.

Similarly, it is important to set expectations while you are traveling. If your children are going to be traveling by boat or some other watercraft, insist that they wear life jackets. If anyone will be riding bikes, insist on helmets and reflectors. If you are driving your brood somewhere, make sure that everyone keeps their seat belts on and that no one dangerously distracts the driver.

Spring vacation can be an enjoyable experience for all. However, it is also traditionally a time during which children and teens sustain numerous injuries. Taking care to be proactive about this fact may help you keep your kids and teens from harm.
