Could your home environment be hazardous to your child?

Parents tend to worry about their children. They worry if their children are receiving proper nutrition, if they are being adequately educated and about the content of their children’s character. But perhaps most pressingly and most consistently, parents worry about whether or not their children will remain safe. As a result, many parents go to great lengths to ensure their children’s safety.

However, even the most safety-conscious parents may be surprised to learn how dangerous the homes of average Americans tend to be. A report recently released by the organization Safe Kids Worldwide indicates that children frequently die in their own homes due to numerous preventable hazards. Thankfully, if you are aware of these hazards, you can address them before your children experience injury or death as a result of their presence in your home.

Suffocation is one of the leading causes of death among American babies. The most important thing you can do to prevent suffocation in babies is to ensure that their cribs are clear of any materials which could suffocate them and that the area around their cribs is also free of such hazards.

Other significant hazards include bathtub drowning, burns, poisoning and falls from windows or staircases. It is imperative that you never, ever leave a young child alone in the bath, that you lock up all products which could poison your child and that you child-proof your home as completely as possible to prevent burns and falls. These actions may not prevent every kind of major home-related accident, but they can absolutely help you to keep your child as safe as possible.
