CDC: More kids are suffering playground concussions

Is there any place more fun for kids than a playground? No matter what playground you go to, kids will always find something fun to do, whether it’s swinging on the swings or racing down a slide.

Unfortunately, even though playgrounds are built for kids, they aren’t necessarily maintained for them. Sadly, this appears to be one possible reason for the rise in concussions and traumatic brain injuries among children under the age of 14, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Other reasons for the reported increase in concussions could be improved awareness of concussion symptoms among parents and teachers. Instead of sending a child back to play after a fall from the monkey bars or slide, an adult may see a child losing balance, vomiting, struggling with confusion and fatigue and instead get him or her to the hospital for tests.

Whatever the reasons may be, the fact is that tens of thousands of young kids have wound up in the emergency rooms for accidents suffered on a playground in recent years. Some accidents are just that: accidents. Others are preventable and linked to negligence including improper maintenance.

It must also be noted that concussions and TBI are not the only risks for kids at playgrounds. In fact, a number of injuries are even more common. These include:

  • Fractures
  • Serious cuts
  • Scrapes and bruises
  • Internal injuries
  • Muscle strains and sprains

If your child has suffered these or any other type of injury on playground and the damage is serious, it can be important that you act on their behalf to hold the appropriate party accountable.

Doing so on your own and without the benefit of legal experience can be very difficult and frustrating, so it is generally wise to consult an attorney who can guide you through the process of filing a personal injury claim. With legal support and advice, you can pursue the compensation you and your child deserve.
