Plan for sober ride home this Super Bowl Sunday

Football fans in the state are buzzing with excitement as the Atlanta Falcons prepare to take on the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl this Sunday. But anyone who plans on attending a Super Bowl party and drinking should also plan a sober ride home because a DUI is a surefire way to ruin the fun.

State and local officials are warning Falcon fans that officers will be out in full force all weekend in effort to keep drunk drivers off of the roads. In a press release, the Governor's Office of Highway Safety said the state will "step up their patrols and enforcement efforts," which drivers will likely notice.

Drunk driving can lead to serious fines and penalties -- including jail time, loss of driving privileges, community service and probation -- but it can also result in a serious or fatal accident.

The most recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that more than 350 people were killed in Georgia roads in drunk driving accidents in 2015. Drunk driving fatalities tend to spike on holidays and days of major sporting events, including the Super Bowl.

As a law firm that represents people facing drunk driving charges as well as families that have lost loved ones in drunk driving accidents, we wholeheartedly believe that drunk driving is not a risk worth taking.

Four ways to get home safe

The good news is that there are plenty of options for getting home safely after enjoying Super Bowl festivities, including:

  • Calling a cab or ride sharing service such as Uber or Lyft
  • Taking public transportation
  • Arranging for a family member or friend to be a sober driver

Another interesting option that Georgia residents have this year is the Tow to Go program, which is being offered by AAA and Budweiser Friday through 6 a.m. on Monday.

With the program, a AAA tow truck will give people and their vehicles a lift to a safe location within 10 miles of pickup for free. It is available to both AAA members and non-members in most locations by calling 855-2-TOW-2-GO, or 855-286-9246.

With that said, have a fun and safe Super Bowl weekend... and GO FALCONS!
