Personal Attention From The Experienced Advocate You Deserve

Former sheriff deputy might begin criminal defense soon

A 24-year veteran of the Georgia police recently retired after being accused of driving while intoxicated. She was charged with DUI shortly before making the announcement that she would be retiring, and, according to a statement from the police department where she was once employed, the two events are related. It is not yet clear if she has begun any criminal defense preparations.

Police were first alerted to the possibility of a drunk driver when an off-duty officer phoned in a concern. He allegedly spotted the woman leaving a restaurant and cautioned that she might not be able to drive her vehicle safely. The off-duty officer proceeded to follow the woman until an on-duty officer was able to catch up.

The officer followed the driver for some time, noting that her driving style seemed to be jerky and that she took an especially wide turn that caused her to momentarily veer into the opposite lane of traffic. At that point he initiated a traffic stop, during which he supposedly smelled alcohol coming from her vehicle. She also apparently conceded to drinking earlier that night. He performed an on-site sobriety test and proceeded to arrest her for driving under the influence of alcohol.

No matter what stage of life a person is in, a DUI charge can have a devastating and gut-wrench effect on a person's life. Many people charged with DUI lose their driving privileges, and conviction can result in even more difficult consequences. Before proceeding with any type of criminal defense strategy, most Georgia defendants can benefit from first carefully examining their charges alongside their respective counsel. Without the knowledge that comes from this thorough assessment, it can be difficult to understand how to approach the charges.
