Fatal car accident kills 1, sends others to Georgia hospitals

Georgia police believe that alcohol played a major role in a recent fatal car accident. Several individuals were also injured in the accident, including the driver who is believed to have been at fault as well as a 1-year-old child. Criminal charges have not yet been filed pending further investigation, although it is likely that related charges will be filed soon.

Sometime before 10 p.m., a suspected drunk driver failed to maintain his own lane and drifted across the center line of traffic. His vehicle then hit an oncoming car, killing one of the passengers and injuring several others. The driver, another adult passenger and the 1-year-old boy were all taken to area hospitals in order to receive treatment. While they are all expected to survive the wreck, the infant was last listed as being in serious condition.

The driver who police believe was under the influence of alcohol was also injured, as was his passenger. Authorities have cited both alcohol and speed as key factors in the wreck, but they have not disclosed how this was determined. Still, it is likely that criminal charges will be ultimately filed against the driver who left his lane of traffic.

Holding negligent drivers criminally responsible for their actions is a necessary aspect of upholding both Georgia state and federal law, but it does not necessarily provide much other than a sense of justice for car accident victims. Instead, those who have been injured or who have lost a loved one in a car wreck can pursue their own civil claims against the driver. When personal injury or wrongful death suits are navigated successfully, victims and their families can achieve just compensation for the damages caused by the accident. Furthermore, those pursuing those claims can also use evidence collected by police that was also used to back up any criminal allegations.
