2016 accident related fatalities already being counted

As the calendar flipped over to a new year, those responsible for keeping record of car accident fatalities started over from zero. Sadly, 2016 is not off to a stellar start. On the very first day of the new year, there were three accident-related fatalities on Georgia roads, all of which occurred before dawn ever broke.

A hit and run accident on I-20 resulted in one of those fatalities. Although the details are sparse, a driver struck another vehicle with his own, killing the other person behind the wheel before fleeing. Another accident I-985 was responsible for the remaining two fatalities as well as at least one critical injury to a surviving individual.

A day that begins with hope for so many ended in tragedy for those affected by these wrecks, but unfortunately, these accidents are not all that surprising. Over 1,140 people died in car accidents in 2014. By 2015, that number increased by almost 200 fatalities to 1,339. With such tragedies striking on the first day of the year, it might be an indicator that the growing trend will continue.

Climbing behind the wheel of a vehicle is accepting an enormous responsibility. Reckless or negligent driving behaviors can lead to devastating car wrecks that leave people injured or even dead. Victims and their families often struggle to make sense of life after such a tragic accident, a task that can be overwhelming at best. Many people in Georgia choose to handle this type of situation through either a personal injury or wrongful death suit in order to achieve compensation for injuries and other related damages. Recourse gained through this action can help ease the transition for victims and family members who are learning how to handle the new circumstances.
