Georgia Interstate 285 ranked number 1 for this type of accident

No matter how carefully or defensively a person drives, there is little protection against a negligent, drunk or reckless driver. Interstates are especially notorious for catastrophic and fatal accidents, and Georgia interstates are certainly no exception. A recent review of data retrieved from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration revealed a startling fact about just how dangerous Georgia roads can be, and singled out one type of accident as especially common.

Interstate 285, the loop that runs around Atlanta, was the deadliest interstate in 2013. In that year alone, there were 26 fatal car accidents that resulted in 29 deaths. In comparison, the state of Georgia as a whole had just over 1,000 fatal accidents, earning it the ranking of the seventh deadliest state when it comes to car accidents.

In total, data from 315 different interstates was collected, revealing a total of 2,867 fatal accidents. When the number of accidents was divided by the length of the interstate, the analyst was able to determine approximately how many fatal accidents occurred per every 10 miles of each respective interstate. I-285 logged a staggering 3.5 fatal accidents for every 10 miles.

The number of fatal accidents does not necessarily correspond to the total number of fatalities. For instance, the major interstates involved in the analysis produced a total of more than 2,800 fatal accidents, while nationwide nearly 33,000 people were killed in car accidents. Georgia families are often left behind to pick up the pieces after a fatal car accident, a task that can be especially difficult for already grieving families. Although legal matters might not be on the mind during this period, many surviving family members are able to successfully recover damages related to a wreck through the filing of wrongful death suits, an action that could ultimately make handling a person's estate easier.
