Driver who allegedly caused hit and run accident surrendered

An alleged hit-and-run driver turned herself in to police shortly after fleeing the scene of a wreck, according to law enforcement authorities. The two-car accident resulted in one fatality and caused traffic to stall for several miles. Police did not say why the driver ultimately chose to surrender.

The 47-year-old victim was traveling in the southbound lanes of Georgia I-85 at the time of the wreck. Although it has not been made immediately clear exactly what led up to this crash, a nearby vehicle struck his pickup truck. Unable to regain control of his pickup following the collision, he was thrown out after his vehicle flipped. Authorities determined that he died while still at the scene of the accident.

Witnesses told police that they saw the driver of the other vehicle flee the scene. Several witnesses also provided further details regarding the accident. When the driver later showed up at a local police station, she allegedly told authorities that she had been in a wreck, and was subsequently arrested on hit-and-run charges as well as vehicular homicide.

Should the family members of the victim decide to pursue a wrongful death suit against the driver, it may be possible for them to utilize evidence or witness statements collected by police during their criminal investigation as evidence of negligent behavior. Of course, criminal charges are not necessary when filing these types of civil claims in Georgia. Criminal negligence does not necessarily correlate to negligent driving behavior in an accident, which gives surviving family members the opportunity to seek compensation and justice even in the absence of a criminal conviction.
